PFLAG National statement on Obergefell v. Hodges

Moments ago, PFLAG National board president Jean Hodges released the following statement regarding today's incredible victory for marriage equality at the Supreme Court:

“Today feels like a wedding that the entire country was invited to, and the whole PFLAG family is right up front with hearts overflowing and tears in our eyes. By affirming the rights of all loving couples to commit to each other with the full weight of legal protection that marriage affords, the Supreme Court has affirmed a founding principle that we must all continue to strive for: a more perfect union.

While we celebrate today’s victory, we are dedicated to continuing and redoubling our advocacy work to secure legislation that explicitly protects people who are LGBTQ from discrimination in the workplace, in their homes, in their schools and in their communities. Now is the time to expand federal law--law which already protects people from discrimination based on race, sex, age, ethnicity, disability, and religion--to include explicit protection from discrimination based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.”

Hooray! My children are now first-class citizens in the eyes of American law. Thank you, PFLAG, for all you've done over the years to advocate for all our children, and to educate those who needed to learn about what love really means. ---Betsy Hanger, PFLAG Pasadena Secretary and proud mom of two queer kids

In 1992 our son came out to us and then brought us to Denver PFLAG. My wife,. Judy and I have been with PFLAG ever since. She is currently the President of PFLAG Highlands Ranch while I am the Chair of the Board for Denver PFLAG.

In 1992, Amendment 2 was passed in the State of Colorado. It stated that gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people could not have equal rights in holding a job or renting an apartment if one was openly gay. Those opposing us said that the LGBT community was asking for "special rights." Amendment 2 was eventually found to be unconstitutional in 1996.

They were not special rights any more than the right to marry the person of your choice is today. Now, all 3 of these issues have been settled in Colorado, and many but not all of the states in the USA. This has taken the loving, hard work of advocacy and education by the members of PFLAG.

Congratulations to all who helped make this happen. Hurray for Equality. Bob Murray, Chair of the Board of PFLAG Denver

My wife and I are traveling in Israel, visiting family. During a discussion with my Israeli brother-in-law, I explained how the US Supreme Court has now ruled to level the marriage "playing field", no longer will conservative organizations control which couples may marry and which not. Five good and fair justices have ruled for equality for our children. This is truly a great time to be part of the PFLAG family.

Overjoyed as I am, let's keep working for religious institution's full inclusion, especially of transgender people making medical transitions, which Catholic and some other faiths forbid. Understanding how different theologies view the nature of the human person will help us respectfully engage people in the pews and their leaders.
